OCT & the importance of an eye health check

HEIDELBERG SPECTRALIS 4D OCT with TruTrack HD

It’s easy to forget about your eye health when you have prefect vision. However you could be completely unaware that you have a sight treating eye disease. 1 in 2 cases of sight loss can be avoided through early detection and the right treatment at the right time. Paul Whiteman Optometrists can provide the peace of mind that come s with knowing that your eyes are healthy or that we can see the smallest change before you do.
Only by having the most advanced diagnostic equipment can we ensure early detection, monitoring and treatment of a number of sight threatening diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease.

We have invested in the Spectralis 4D OCT eye scanner, which is the eye’s equivalent of a CAT scanner for the eyes. It is the instrument of choice for retinal specialist within the NHS and throughout the World.
OCT is much more that just a photo and Spectralis adds a 4th dimension to the 3D scan images it takes. Spectralis allows us to monitor change over time to within 1/1000 of a millimetre. OCT should therefore be performed each time you have your eye health check to enable us to detect any developing eye conditions often many years before you would be able to see them yourself.

1 in 2 cases of serious sight loss is caused by AMD

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is hereditary and can rob you of your central vision. Once this is affected simple activities like driving, watching TV and even recognising faces becomes difficult or impossible. Having a Heidelberg Spectralis 4D OCT eye scan allows us to see the smallest change before you do and that changes everything. The earlier AMD is detected the earlier treatment can begin and the better the outcome for you.

1 in 2 patients with glaucoma don’t know they have the condition

Glaucoma is often a hereditary condition. Very cleverly your brain compensates for the blind spots in your vision by filling in the gaps. Unfortunately, this results in either seeing things that aren’t really thereof missing the things that are. With the Heidelberg Spectralis 4D OCT we see the smallest changes before you do and that changes everything. Glaucoma is very treatable and early detection means less damage to your vision.

1 in 2 patients with diabetes are unaware they have the disease

Diabetes is a hereditary disease that can cause sight loss. Early detection and treatment   can reduce the chance of sight loss for 9 out of 10 patients with diabetic retinopathy. With the Heidelberg Spectralis 4D OCT using the MultiColor eye scan module we can see the smallest changes before you do and that changes everything.

1 in 2, 60 year olds have some form of cataract

350,000 cataract procedures are carried out each year in the UK with fantastic results. To get the best outcome from cataract surgery it’s important to have a full retinal examination prior to treatment. With the Heidelberg Spectralis 4D OCT we can ‘see through cataracts’ and that allows better treatment planning and a superior outcome for you.

AGE RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)

It affects activities like driving, reading, watching TV and even recognising faces becomes difficult. The earlier AMD is detected the earlier treatment can begin and the better the outcome for you.

COMMON EYE CONDITIONS

Not all eye conditions require surgery. Regular eye examinations by your optometrist allows early detection of the following eye conditions. Nearly everyone will suffer with one of the following eye conditions at some point in their lives.

Remember that 1 in 2 cases of sight loss can be avoided through early detection (and the right treatment) – we have the state of the art equipment, knowledge and expertise to see the smallest change before you do.
We have the technology to detect sight threatening eye diseases up to 4 years before you notice anything wrong with your eye sight.

Often we take our eyes for granted. We forget that with many eye conditions there are few indications that you have a problem with your eye health, often because pain isn’t the first symptom nor may there be a reduction in the clarity of your vision. Often issues with your eye health also indicate an underlying health condition.
It’s certainly true that the older you are the more likely you are to suffer with cataracts, macular degeneration or glaucoma but equally, many younger people suffer with dry eyes and floaters.
Here we have given information about a few of the commonest eye conditions. If you have any problems with your eyes or eyesight then book an appointment with one of our optometrists.

GLAUCOMA

1 IN 2 PATIENTS WITH GLAUCOMA DONT KNOW THEY HAVE THE CONDITION
Glaucoma is often an inherited condition. Very cleverly our brains compensate for the blind spots it causes in our vision by filling in the gaps. Unfortunately, this results in either seeing things that aren’t really there or missing things that are.
Glaucoma is a very treatable condition but early detection is essential as sight, once lost, can’t be recovered.

MACULAR DEGENERATION

1 IN 2 CASES OF SERIOUS SIGHT LOSS IS CAUSED BY AMD
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a hereditary condition and can rob you of your detailed vision. It can cause a blank patch, dark spot or distortion in the centre of your view. It affects activities like driving, reading, watching TV and even recognising faces becomes difficult.
The earlier AMD is detected the earlier treatment can begin and the better the outcome for the patient.

CATARACTS

1 IN 2  60 YEAR OLDS HAVE SOME FORM OF CATARACT
350,000 cataract procedures are carried out each year in the UK. To get the best outcome from surgery it’s important to have a full retinal examination prior to treatment.

MYOPIA

WHATEVER TREATMENT YOUR EYES NEED WE CAN ARRANGE IT
Myopia, is a common vision problem that typically begins in childhood and can worsen during the teenage years.
The main cause of myopia is genetic factors, although environment and lifestyle factors can also contribute to its development.
Myopia treatments include corrective spectacle lenses or contact lenses, laser refractive surgery, such as LASIK and Myopia Control which involves wearing specially designed spectacles or contact lenses and lifestyle changes such as spending more time outdoors, taking frequent breaks from screens to reduce the progression of myopia.

DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

1 IN 2 PATIENTS WITH DIABETES ARE UNAWARE THEY HAVE THE DISEASE
Diabetes is often an inherited disease and is the most common cause of blindness in the working age population.
Early detection and treatment can reduce the chance of sight loss for 9 out of 10 people with diabetic retinopathy.
Nowadays with the advent of advanced imaging technology such as our Heidelberg Spectralis 4D OCT with MultiColor module we can see the smallest changes in your eyes long before you do.

FLASHES & FLOATERS

WHATEVER TREATMENT YOUR EYES NEED WE CAN ARRANGE IT
Floaters are semi-transparent or cloudy particles within the vitreous gel inside your eyes. This jelly-like fluid is normally clear. Floaters are quite common, especially as you get older and usually, but not always, harmless. They often appear as specks, threadlike strands or cobwebs and are most visible when you look at light backgrounds such as the sky or a white surface.

DRY EYE SYNDROME

DRY EYE SYNDROME CAUSES AND TREATMENT
Dry eye syndrome is a condition where the eyes do not produce enough tears or the quality of the tears is poor, resulting in dryness, discomfort, redness and irritation.
The most common causes of dry eye syndrome include aging, medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, environmental factors such as dry air, wind, and air conditioning as well as staring at computer screens.
Treatment for dry eyes can include eye drops, lifestyle changes, medication and Intense Pulsed Laser (IPL).

KERATOCONUS

WHATEVER TREATMENT YOUR EYES NEED WE CAN ARRANGE IT
Keratoconus is a progressive condition that affects the shape and clarity of the cornea. It causes the eye to develop astigmatism which may impair vision to varying degrees. Although its exact causes are not fully understood, there are several risk factors that may increase its likelihood, such as genetics, eye rubbing, and certain medical conditions. Fortunately, there are various approaches that can help manage keratoconus, from wearing glasses and contact lenses to undergoing surgery or corneal cross-linking.
